How to Get Found in AI Search: 10 Simple Steps
People aren't just Googling businesses anymore. They're asking ChatGPT and other AI tools who to hire, where to shop, and which companies to trust. So how do you get YOUR business included in those answers?

You've worked hard on your website. You've invested in SEO, written content, and made sure your business shows up on Google.
But now there's another way people are finding businesses online: artificial intelligence (AI).
Instead of searching Google for "best landscaper near me" and scrolling through websites, someone might ask ChatGPT, "Who are some reliable landscapers in Mesa, Arizona, who specialize in low-maintenance yards?"
Or they might search Google and see an AI-generated answer at the top of the results.
So how do you get your business included in those AI answers?
The good news is that you probably don't need to start your marketing strategy over. If you've already invested in SEO, you've done some of the important groundwork. But there are additional steps you can take to help AI search tools find, understand, and potentially recommend your business.
1. Make Sure AI Can Find Your Website
Before worrying about getting recommended by AI, make sure search engines can access your website. Google uses information from its search index to help create AI Overviews and other AI search results. ChatGPT has its own search crawler, called OAI-SearchBot.
If your website blocks these systems, your content may be harder to discover or include in AI-generated answers.
What you can do
Ask your website developer or SEO consultant to check that your important pages are accessible to search engines and that your website isn't unintentionally blocking AI search crawlers.
2. Answer the Questions Your Customers Actually Ask
Think about the questions customers ask when they call, email, or meet with you.
Do they ask how much something costs?
How long does a service appointment or consultation take?
What's included?
How does your service compare to another option?
Those questions are excellent opportunities for website content.
For example, a pool company could answer:
How often should a pool be cleaned in Arizona?
What's the difference between weekly pool service and full-service maintenance?
How much does pool maintenance cost in Chandler?
What you can do
Write down five questions customers frequently ask. Then check whether your website answers them clearly. You can add answers to existing service pages, create an FAQ section, or write a blog that explains a topic in more detail.
Don't write just for AI. Write helpful answers for real people.
3. Explain What Makes Your Business Different
Here's something that’s easy for business owners to overlook: Their websites explain what they do, but not necessarily why someone should choose them.
Imagine an AI tool comparing three local companies that all offer the same service. If every website says "great customer service," "affordable prices," and "quality work," there isn't much to distinguish them.
Instead, provide specific details.
Maybe your business has 25 years of experience. Perhaps customers work directly with the owner instead of an account manager. Maybe you specialize in a service that your competitors don't offer.
What you can do
Review your About Page and Services Pages. Add specific, accurate information about your experience, specialties, qualifications, and approach. Give customers and search systems something meaningful to understand about your business.
4. Keep Your Business Information Consistent Online
Your website isn't the only place people can find information about your business. There may be listings on Google, Yelp, industry directories, professional associations, and other websites.
Make sure your business name, phone number, website address, service areas, and other important details are accurate wherever they appear.
Why?
Conflicting information can confuse customers and make it harder for search systems to identify the correct business.
What you can do
Start with your Google Business Profile, then review a few important directories for your industry. You don't need to be listed on hundreds of websites. Focus on accurate information in places that matter to your customers. You might also consider a service that sends out your information to dozens or hundreds of local business directories like Yext Local or SEMRush Local.
5. Encourage Customers to Leave Reviews
Reviews have always been valuable for building trust, and they remain important as people research businesses through AI-powered tools. They provide information about actual customer experiences, including what customers appreciate about your services.
For example, a review that mentions responsive communication, a successful project, or a particular service provides more useful detail than a simple five-star rating.
That doesn't mean collecting reviews guarantees your business will appear in AI answers.
But authentic customer feedback strengthens your online reputation and gives potential customers more information when comparing businesses.
What you can do
Make asking satisfied customers for honest reviews part of your regular process. Don't offer rewards in exchange for positive reviews or tell customers what to write.
6. Show Your Experience, Not Just Your Knowledge
AI can generate general information about almost any topic. What it can't do is replace your actual business experience.
That's an opportunity!
Instead of publishing another general article with tips that can be found on hundreds of websites, share what you've learned from working with real customers. For example, a home remodeling company might write about a kitchen renovation, explaining the challenges, decisions, and final results.
A marketing consultant might explain why a particular strategy worked for one business but wasn't the right choice for another.
What you can do
Create a case study, share a project example, or write an article based on a common problem you've solved. Original information gives people a reason to visit your website instead of reading another generic article.

7. Make Sure Other Websites Mention Your Business
Your website tells people about your company. Other websites can provide additional information and independent recognition. These mentions might come from a local chamber of commerce, an industry association, a business partner, a news article, or a community organization.
You don't need to chase mentions everywhere. Focus on genuine relationships and opportunities.
What you can do
Look for organizations, publications, and professional groups that are relevant to your business. If you're involved in community events, professional organizations, or collaborative projects, make sure your participation is accurately represented online when appropriate.
The goal isn't simply to collect links. It's to build a credible presence beyond your own website.
8. Keep Your Content Accurate and Updated
Imagine someone asks an AI tool whether your company offers a particular service. Your website says yes, but the page hasn't been updated in three years, and you've since changed what you offer.
Outdated information can create confusion for both customers and search tools. You don't need to rewrite your website every month. But you should review information that changes.
What you can do
Check your service pages, pricing information, hours, service areas, team biographies, and important blog articles. Correct outdated information and add useful details when something changes.
9. Make Your Website Easy to Understand
You don't need to create a completely new website for AI search. However, your content should be easy to read and organized in a way that makes sense.
Use descriptive headings, clear service descriptions, and straightforward language. For example, instead of a heading that simply says "Our Solutions," use something more specific, such as "Residential Pool Cleaning and Maintenance Services." These are also tactics used in Conversion Marketing.
What you can do
Pick one important service page and read it as though you know nothing about the company. Can you quickly understand what the business offers, who it helps, where it operates, and how to get started?
If not, improve the content for your customers first.
10. Test How AI Talks About Your Business
Here's an interesting exercise you can try today. Open ChatGPT or another AI search tool and ask questions that a potential customer might ask.
For example:
"Can you recommend a mobile phlebotomy company in Phoenix that offers pediatric blood draws?"
"What should I look for when hiring a digital marketing consultant in Mesa?"
Look at the answers.
Are businesses mentioned?
What information does the AI provide?
Are there links to supporting sources?
What followup questions does AI suggest?
Then ask about your own business.
Does the answer accurately describe your services?
Is important information missing?
Does it confuse your business with another company?
What you can do
Test a few relevant questions and keep track of what you discover. Remember that AI answers can change based on the question, location, available sources, and other factors. One test doesn't tell you everything about your visibility. But it can help you identify missing or inaccurate information worth addressing.

Do You Need to Change Your Entire SEO Strategy for AI?
No.
Traditional SEO and AI search visibility have a lot in common. Both benefit from useful content, accessible websites, accurate information, and a strong online reputation.
There are new terms being used, including Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), but don't let the terminology make things more complicated than necessary.
You don't need to chase every new AI marketing trend or completely rebuild your website.
Start by improving the information that's already there. Make your expertise clear. Answer customer questions. Build a trustworthy online presence.
Remember, no one can guarantee that an AI tool will recommend your business. What you can do is improve the information available to those tools and make it easier for potential customers to discover you.
