Improve Your Local Google Listing

In the ever-changing world of search engines, and with Google seemingly taking over the world internet search, it’s not impossible to be found. But it is very important.

Rule #1: Start with Google My Business

Create a business listing and do it STAT.

Yes, you will have to set up another Google account, yes you will have a new Google+ social media account to manage, yes you will have another business listing to manage, yes it’s a little bit of work.

But it’s worth it.

Set it up, fill out the profile completely, and get that verification code mailed to you to get verified. Put your first post up on Google+. Then use this checklist to make sure you’re getting the most out of your Google My Business listing.

Setup:

  • Choose an accurate business category – and more than one if it fits.

  • Use product or service keywords and location in the business title.

  • Use product or service keywords in the page title and page description.

  • Use location keywords in the page description.

  • Use a local area code.

  • Add photos of the place of business in the photo section.

  • Verify your business.

Beyond setup:

You’ll rank higher if you have:

  • A complete profile

  • Pictures in your My Business and G+ profile

  • A high number of positive business reviews. (Click here to find out how to easily get more reviews.)

  • Frequent Facebook posts (we're talking daily)

  • Videos with high-quality content that is related to your business

  • Text descriptions that include location words

  • Writeups from other media outlets

If you’ve been on Google My Business or Google+ for a while, feel free to add your advice in the comments.
